About the implementation and examples

Engineering notes draw on author-supplied MailTrace development reports through 13 October 2026. They describe the documented revision, including local work, rather than independently verified live deployment. Experiment designs and architecture proposals describe work to evaluate. Examples are educational, use synthetic data and are not copied production code.

Soft membership answers a narrower question

A fitted mixture estimates how strongly an observation belongs to each model component under its assumptions. The components are not automatically legal categories or concrete requests. Their probabilities are not confidence that a duty was breached, a response was adequate or an issue should be closed.

High-dimensional embedding spaces also make the covariance choice and available sample size important. Reducing dimensions may make the experiment tractable, but changes the representation and must be evaluated. A small case with few messages is not a reliable basis for fitting a complex density model.

Use ambiguity to prioritise inspection

One possible experiment would use uncertainty across components to select examples for review. The calculation below measures entropy of a synthetic probability distribution. It does not fit a Gaussian mixture and does not define a production threshold.

python · A synthetic ambiguity measure; high entropy can also indicate a poor model.
from math import log

def entropy(probabilities):
    if any(p < 0 for p in probabilities) or abs(sum(probabilities) - 1) > 1e-9:
        raise ValueError("Expected a probability distribution")
    return -sum(p * log(p) for p in probabilities if p)

assert entropy([0.5, 0.5]) > entropy([0.99, 0.01])

Compare the review outcome, not just the fit

A better statistical fit does not necessarily produce more useful issues. Evaluate whether the proposed ambiguous examples help reviewers find genuine multi-topic messages, and whether stable concrete requests remain separate. Compare against a simpler signal such as disagreement between existing candidate rules.

If the experiment is useful, keep it advisory. The output could help order a review queue while the existing source membership and approval contracts remain in control. If it mostly surfaces irrelevant uncertainty or unstable components, the right outcome is to record that result and avoid adding the model to the product.
